Owing to its fortuitous conditions - the Hooghly river basin ensuring ample water, a    fine port connecting it to other nodes and its unlimited possibility for growth with a     vast hinterland to support it - Calcutta had become the chief industrial city of   British   India. Naturally, the demand for skilled engineers increased greatly in the first   quarter of the   twentieth century, and the few engineering colleges that existed at the   time were hard-pressed.
